Originally published in Vietnamese in the collection Ac Tinh , we translated it into English with the help of the author. It includes her original paintings as well. Read in full below:

I focused my attention on an amplifier lying on the shelf behind Hieu, the founder of Go West Library. He left his seat to retrieve a cable, and after returning he plugged his phone into the machine, which stood out from the rest of the room. A familiar tune blasted out, followed by Neil Tennant's high-pitched, yet delicate vocals — "Go West, where the skies are blue!" Hieu's striking answer to our inquiry about the library's name came in stark contrast to our earlier encounter with one of his staff, the librarian, who was startled by our visit because she doesn't usually expect readers to pop by in the morning.

The idea for Moving Reels: A Social Dialog formed in 2016 as the result of a dialogue between Dr. Shweta Kishore, a scholar, documentary filmmaker, film and media lecturer at RMIT University, and Zoe Butt, a director and curator at The Factory Contemporary Arts Center. The program is a series of workshops that includes screenings of films made in a different geographical context, followed by a discussion. The first phase of the program looks at the social, cultural and political linkage between South Asia and Vietnam.

Sitting down for a bowl of phở, sipping a glass of cà phê sữa đá , visiting the Saigon Post Office: these activities are all too common to the tourist experience in Saigon. So much so that it's often easy to reduce the image of the city into a monotonous picture in the mind of foreign imaginations.

In April this year, a sexual assault allegation surrounding a female intern and a Tuoi Tre editor made national headlines and prompted an outpouring of discussions that paved the way for Vietnam's #MeToo movement. After five months of investigation, the police concluded that the case will not proceed due to lack of evidence.
Food Culture
From sweet treats such as yam paste, chè bạch quả (ginkgo soup) and bite-size pastries to savory staples such as lotus root soup, bánh củ cải (radish cake), cốn xại (pickles) and xá pấu (salted radish) eaten with rice congee, links to my family's Teochew roots were made and consumed through food, both in everyday life and during festive occasions.

Development
The accelerated urbanization of Saigon has led to the rapid metamorphosis of its landscape. This process, however, is hardly evenly distributed. While residents living in the inner city's center enjoy the convenience of having a variety of transport infrastructures that makes getting around an easy task, the same is not always true for dwellers in the outskirts of the city.

In late June, a popular subscription television channel caused controversy by featuring a bikini-clad female show host on a prediction segment aired before a men's FIFA World Cup match. Another television network — Vietnam's Television (VTV) — was also criticized for including "beauty queens" whose outfits were revealing and whose football knowledge was questionable. While these media tactics are not new, the discussion surrounding these incidents is an example of how the public discourse of increasing gender equality is less often a positive sign than a glossy veneer for an ugly core.
