An employee at Vietnam’s largest airport was recently caught stealing an iPhone from a traveler’s luggage and another siphoning jet fuel from an airplane, reports Thanh Nien.
In June, a janitor was found hiding a stolen iPhone in his underpants while the gasoline robber was apprehended while tapping into the fuel tanks of a Jetstar aircraft in January. These are the two most notable of the five theft incidents reported at the airport this year.
Though it’s unclear whether charges will be brought against the employees, Nguyen Nam Tien, deputy director of the airport, said that in such cases thieves are “usually” fired and barred from obtaining another job in the aviation industry.
Tan Son Nhat has put a number of schemes in place to reduce theft, including new surveillance cameras, requiring baggage handlers to wear pocketless outfits and prohibiting them from carrying phones and personal items while working.
Such crimes are also an issue at Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport. Last month, a worker of the airport’s ground services company was arrested on suspicion of nine luggage thefts since last November.
