Tropical Storm Podul tore through North-Central Vietnam last weekend, causing widespread flooding and at least six casualties.
Storm Podul created flash floods alongside intense thunderstorms, and both of which were blamed for fatalities, VnExpress reports.
One person died in each of Quang Binh and Hoa Binh provinces due to flooding, while lightning killed another individual in the latter province and two more people in Thai Nguyen. In Hanoi, a young man was killed by a falling tree, while a couple was swept away by flooding in Lao Cai Province. They are yet to be found.
Meanwhile, 17 people on three fishing boats based in Binh Dinh Province are thought to be adrift at sea somewhere between Ha Tinh Province and Da Nang, where they lost contact last Thursday. Podul also damaged at least 1,000 homes throughout impacted provinces.
Meanwhile, Zing reports that central and northern provinces need to be on alert as three tropical systems converge in the East Sea, an extremely unusual phenomenon.
Tropical Depression Kajiki is currently moving over Quang Nam Province and is expected to move northeast and out to sea where it could potentially strengthen. Concurrently, another area of low pressure is already lingering in the East Sea and Tropical Storm Lingling is heading just northeast of the Philippines.
Officials told VnExpress that the interaction of these storms is difficult to predict, but heavy rains and strong winds are expected in the Central Highlands and many central provinces that are still recovering from Storm Podul.
