Nothing says “good morning” like having to wade through knee-deep flooding and battle severe traffic congestion on your way to work.
Due to the effect of Typhoon Doksuri, an imminent tropical storm that’s about to hit Vietnam during the weekend, last night many Saigon districts were hit with torrential rain starting from 1-2am until this morning.
As a result, most of the city’s most crucial thoroughfares were inundated with rainwater. VnExpress reported that streets in District 7 like Huynh Tuan Phat and Pham Huu Lau, and in Binh Thanh District such as Nguyen Huu Canh and Nguyen Xi were waterlogged.
On other streets, the extended period of rain also slowed down traffic, causing congestion that drags on for hours. This was the case of Cong Hoa, Truong Chinh and Nguyen Thai Son Streets – some of Saigon’s most notorious congestion hotspots – on which most commuters were stuck this morning.
Le Dinh Quyet, a weather expert from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, told VnExpress that Doksuri was the main contributing factor to the massive amount of rainwater that battered Saigon and nearby localities last night.
