Perhaps Hanoi's Old Quarter streets won't be such a nightmare for pedestrians in the future.
According to Dan Tri, officials in Hoan Kiem District have proposed a plan to transform more roads in the Old Quarter into pedestrian streets. This follows the huge popularity of the current weekend pedestrian zone around Hoan Kiem Lake.
Cau Go, Dinh Liet, Hang Be, Gia Ngu, O Quan Chuong, and Dao Duy Tu streets are all included in the proposal, while the alleys of Cau Go and Trung Yen would be pedestrianized as well. This plan will be submitted to municipal leaders for approval.
Meanwhile, authorities have tabled a proposal to ban vehicles around Hoan Kiem Lake for one month in an attempt to test the feasibility of a permanent ban. Local officials are currently determining traffic detours for the ban, yet the idea is facing resistance from local residents and business owners, Tuoi Tre reports.
"If vehicles are banned for a whole month, even just during a certain time frame, our daily lives will be severely affected," Nguyen Van Phuong, who works near the lake, told the news source.
