Saigoneers should avoid going outside during noon, put on their “ninja” gear and slather on ample sunscreen as southern Vietnam will experience high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the next few weeks.
Vietnam’s southern region will witness extended sunshine in the next few weeks, as Tuoi Tre quoted Le Dinh Quyet, the deputy head of the Southern Hydro-Meteorological Center. According to Quyet, the temperature in Saigon and it’s surrounding provinces may reach daily highs of 35-36°C from 11am to 3pm.
This is also when UV radiation could reach dangerous levels. The center recorded measures of 10-12 on the scale on February 14, which is likely to continue with the bout of heatwave until at least February 20.
Guidelines by the US Environmental Protection Agency show that a UV Index reading of 8 to 10 indicates “very high” risk of health issues from unprotected sun exposure, such as skin and eye damage. A level of 11 or more indicates “extremely high” risk. The agency recommends staying indoora between 10am and 4pm. When outdoors, pedestrians should put on broad spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+), protective clothing, wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking glasses.
